London’s Telegraph newspaper reports that some of the fireworks which appeared over Beijing during the television broadcast of the Olympic Opening Ceremony 2008 were actually computer generated.

But — hold on — it’s not necessarily as bad as you think. The faked fireworks were actually set-off at the stadium, but because of potential dangers in filming the display live from a helicopter, viewers at home were shown a pre-recorded, computer-generated shot.”

But what a shame. I watched it just now and thought WOW… that’s AMAZING… I’m so proud to be chinese.. we really clearly did invent fireworks and know what we’re doing…

I mean there’s no denying that this is still one of the best opening Olympic ceremonies in the history of the Olympics. But they probably should have said something. Millions of viewers around the world have probably been sort of fooled. At leats they came out with it.

There’s also a slightly more detailed story at sky.com.
