LOL! That is ridiculous for twitter to limit up to 2,000 people! it is a invaluable marketing tool and it seems to defeat the purpose it was created for.Maybe they need to come up with a id/captra system to lock out spammers from the actual people who want to make this communication tool work

I'm all for the limit - already this week I've had 5 or 6 requests from people who are following 1990+ users (I guess they hit 2000 and a few people blocked them) but only have ~40-50 followers themselves! Makes them look like either spammers or desperate for friends.

I find new people based on those that I follow using the @ - I figure if they're interesting enough for my friends to reply to, they're interesting enough for me to read! ;) Or occasionally from reading blogs I like, most people link to their twitter profile now. I dont want to be randomly added by someone using a bot just because they want to tell us about their new website or service. I think it'd be impossible for someone to actually follow 2000 people or more, unless they build it up very gradually. I've only got 250 and already I find it hard enough to remember who everyone is.

Sylwia - I do use Twitter in similar ways. Esp since I use it mostly from my mobile. It also automatically updates my Facebook profile, which is kinda cool.

I however am finding this limit thing to be a pain. I want to follow more people but Twitter seems to have put a limit. I've emailed them and they have not responded!!

I use Twitter as a diary (now for instance I was travelling and resting from web access for a week, but updated my friends via twitter on what I did in Hungary). I use it as a communication tool but mainlt as information source - mainly on social media.

Restrictions - always are good, but what would Schoble say?;)

Hey guys - thanks for the comments!

I just discovered that you could apparently email Twitter to request them to consider lifting the limit. I might do it after some more experimentations. I'm still pretty new to Twitter tbh, as I joined a while back but never really used it. I'm starting to really love it tho.

I'm trying an interesting experiment - as my friend Tim Ferriss suggested. Tim believes that if he starts following anyone it makes it hard, so he doesn't follow anyone, whereas Scoble suggests the opposite.

I'm going to try both. I'm gonna go on a Twitter Diet, followed by a Twitter feast. Then I'll report back. But rest assured those that follow me, I will definitely follow back in the end :)

Hey dude, great post, I agree with this wholeheartedly. I think twitter's new changes will just deter people from using it in many ways. If they are worried about spam, they should have a report option to block spammers. Or a way to flag them up anyway. Lots of genuine people that just like to follow lots of others. So this is a shame!

Very well said.
And also I like your ideas about twitter and the way you use it much.

Love

From a strictly marketing perspective, I would want to have many people following me, but I cannot manage to follow that many people myself. It would be information overload, and Tim Ferris even advocates a low-information diet and judicious use of Twitter, so the 2000 person follow limit is not so ridiculous.

I may not post anything particularly profound at times, but I try to add a little value every now and then in my tweets. However, I regularly review those I am following and remove those whose updates do not add any value to my life.

Short answer: the limit does not bother me. I am currently following just over 80 people and that feels like too many to me. I need to go back through them and trim down some.

Be well.
